What is fiber internet?
Fiber Internet is a connection with a fiber-optic cable that can send data as fast as about 70% of the speed of light. Optical fibers are no thicker than human hair. Many of these fibers are bundled together to form cables (not to be confused with coaxial wires made of copper).
Fiber also resists electrical interference. In addition, fiber-optic cables are not as sensitive to harsh weather as traditional wires, making them a more reliable form of internet transport.
What are the benefits of fiber internet?
Fiber is perfect for multiple users to connect several devices at once. With CTC Fiber service, you can:
- Upload and download files quickly
- Have a smooth online gaming experience
- Video chat with friends and relatives
- Back up huge files, photos, and videos to the cloud in seconds
Fiber vs. Cable & DSL
Fiber is the newest technology and far surpasses DSL and cable internet in terms of speed and dependability. Fiber is different from traditional cable internet, which transmits information by sending electricity over copper wires. Fiber uses light waves to transmit data back and forth, making it better for delivering the fastest speeds, especially for upload bandwidth. It's also less likely to slow down during high traffic times, like right after school.
What is fiber to the home?
Some providers will deliver a fiber connection to a subdivision and then connect each home using cable or DSL. While it's cheaper for the provider, you lose all the benefits of having a fiber connection. Fiber to the home is fiber all the from the provider to your router. Real fiber internet is delivered via an underground fiber line, which goes right into your house. It enters your home through an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), connecting to your router.
Do I need a particular router?
To take advantage of a fiber connection, you need a modem or router capable of handling that specific connection. Your service provider can make recommendations for a fiber-ready router.
Fiber and WiFi
Fiber and WiFi complement each other very well but are not the same thing. Fiber Internet is the super-fast connection between the internet and your router. WiFi is a wireless signal connecting all your different digital devices to the router via radio waves. When you Google something on your phone, that data travels to the router using WiFi. The router then sends the question to Google using a fiber network. Then the answer makes the same return journey. This entire journey happens in a matter of milliseconds.
Is Fiber Internet Unlimited?
Fiber doesn't automatically give you unlimited data; your service provider makes that choice. CTC includes unlimited data with all our plans. No matter how much you stream, game, or download on your home internet connection, you won't have any extra fees. When shopping for a new internet provider, make sure to ask if they have data caps.
